The ongoing challenge for myself is to constantly grow as an artist and capture a specific energy, with colour, texture and
shape on canvas. I feel that my non-representational art is a huge challenge for me because it is a raw expression of elements
of design rather than a representation of a true object or person. As an artist I feel such a sense of privilege that I am
able to imagine a work of art in my mind and then actually create it. I have to admit that every time that I create something
innovative that works, it is truly a rush for me. And I am simply fuelled to move forward to not only create more paintings
but also to get my current work seen and enjoyed. Although creating art for me is a very personal experience, I feel that
once it is completed I want to open up and share my art on a huge scale.
I see inspiration everywhere in my everyday life, often something ordinary that I can turn into something spectacular.
For example, I might draw inspiration from a fabric or clothing that I have seen in a store, the colour combination could
spark a desire to experiment with those same colours or textures on canvas. Often, I become overwhelmed by a concept and
feel an excitement to create a new painting based on a concept in my mind. The best kind of thrill for me is when I can turn
that image in my mind into a reality. Sadly, not every painting works out the way I planned, but the process is a learning
experience and I have had many happy accidents along the way.
Currently, I have been venturing into expressive landscapes, trees, plants, flowers, probably due to my proximity to
the wetlands in Findlay Creek Village and my newfound love of gardening. This opens an exciting new chapter for me to grow
and learn as a painter. I have used the technique of painting the canvas in a light colour, then layering the colours on
top while the base coat is still wet. I have also gone back to using a lot more gel medium mixed with my paint to create
a textured effect. Moreover, I have tried to limit myself to lighter colours, or pigments mixed with white to maintain a
light fresh effect.
